The AND:

Google's Boolean default is AND; that means if you enter query words without modifiers, Google will search for all of them.

Google always assumes there is an and between any keywords. So, if you enter

Google will search for web pages containing both the word hacker and the word cracker.

The OR

Google will search for all the words. If you want to specify that either word is acceptable, you put an OR between each item.

If you would prefer to be searching for one word or another, enter OR in capital letters.

Google will search for web pages containing either the word world or the word series.

Exact Phrase

Putting quote marks around keywords will allow you to search for an exact phrase. If you enter for example:

Google will only search for web pages containing the entire phrase the sun rises in the east.

Google automatically excludes most single letters, single digits and common words such as “how,” “to” and “where.”
These exclusions allow Google to return search results quicker and Google will
always display which words were excluded just above the search results. If you want Google to include a common word, put the “+” symbol in front of it.

If you want to specify that a query item must not appear in your results, use a - (minus sign or dash).

Video sharing sites like youtube, video Google, metacafe, iFilm, Putfilm, break are many popular those days. Many of these sites are web based that means no download option. So you would like to download these videos other than watching them online.

The Google Operating System. Many of us wish Google would make one so they can beat Microsoft at their own game. Sadly, there is no leaked news to report. However, an analysis of why Google should build an operating system is in order.

Microsoft entered into the search engine game late, but their vast wealth and resources may be able to make up for it. Microsoft realized that they won't make billions from their Operating System forever, so they are trying to get their hands dirty in many other projects and investments.

Google, a younger company that has astonished everybody from the seasoned Wall Street Veteran to the most novice of computer users, has most of it's eggs in one basket. It has been reported that approximately 99% of Google's revenue is through AdWords, their Pay Per Click text advertising service. While the majority of people use Google today, it doesn't mean the majority will use it tomorrow. Google's financial success is due in part to the fact that more people use Google than any other search engine. However, if that changes, it doesn't seem like Google has any backups yet.

Microsoft has realized that they wont be selling there new operating systems through CD's in the future. They have most likely realized that the next big thing in operating systems would basically be an extremely secure online type operating system (whenever they make it so that all new computers always have an internet connection). Thus, Microsoft has invested heavily in many industries. Live.com, Xbox, Zune, and the MSN Network has shown that Microsoft has a long term strategy and desktop operating systems may not have a place in this strategy.

Google has been investing in various other medias as well. However, because Google itself says that Microsoft is one of it's biggest competitor's, it's vital that Google take on Microsoft in Microsoft's home territory.

Microsoft came in to the search engine world, flexing financial muscle, yet have not even come close to toppling Google. It is only right that Google, using it's own financial muscle, comes into the Operating System world.

Now by Operating System, I mean something different than what most of you are thinking. For Google to win Microsoft, it would have to develop such an amazing "Operating System" that it would redefine the words "Operating System." It would have to make Windows seem like an ancient and primitive system.

Currently we have hosts written for GTK+ and QT, with the GTK+ host offering a sidebar similar to that of Google Desktop for Windows.

In 2007 Google added an option to pay for additional storage for Gmail and Picasa Web. The prices have changed since then: for $20/year you get 10 GB instead of 6 GB, for $75/year you get 40 GB from 25 GB, for $250/year you get 150 GB instead of 100 GB and $500/year is the price for 400 GB, up from 250 GB.

Google's offer doesn't look very good if you compare it with the storage offered by Yahoo Mail and Flickr. Yahoo Mail promises to offer "unlimited storage" if you don't abuse the system. "The purpose of unlimited mail isn't to provide an online storage warehouse. Usage that suggests this approach gets flagged by our anti-abuse measures."

Flickr is less generous: you can only upload 100 MB of photos each month if you have a free account. Picasa Web Albums offers 1 GB of storage for free, but a Flickr Pro account costs $25/year and you get "unlimited storage".

Google's offer would make sense if you could use the storage in a service like GDrive, but uploading photos and storing more attachments in Gmail is not enough. There's no defined limit for uploading videos at Google Video, but you need to pay if you want more than 1 GB of storage at Picasa Web Albums.

Google offers a way to purchase more storage space to use with some of its products (currently Gmail and Picasa Web Albums). This extra storage acts as overflow when you run out of free storage space in either product. If you've filled your free storage (5 7.2 GB and counting for Gmail or 1 GB for Picasa Web Albums), you'll automatically use your purchased space to store more pictures and messages up to your new storage limit.

Your shared storage space will be used by whatever product needs it. Picasa's free storage is for photos only, and Gmail's is just for Gmail messages, but the shared storage can be all photos, all messages, or a mix of both. You can't set aside shared storage space for one product - it will be used by any product that's over its free storage quota on a first-come, first-served basis.

Share Personal Information with Your Gmail Contacts

Google Profiles has a new feature that lets you share information about yourself with your contacts. "This information is not public.You control who sees it. Once you've entered your contact information here, you can share it with your friends and family, so they always have the most up-to-date information."

You can add your email addresses, phone numbers, and home address, and allow all your contacts or specific contact groups, like Friends or Family, to see this information on your profile. For some reason, Google doesn't prefill some of the fields like the email address or your Google Talk ID and you can't share the data with contacts that are not part of a group.

It's not clear if the shared data will be used in Gmail, but Microsoft offers a similar feature called Windows Live People that's integrated with Hotmail. "Windows Live People allows real-time updates to contact's information. Suppose one of the user's contacts just moved and has a new home address. When that contact enters their new information in Windows Live People, the user's contact list across Windows Live services is automatically updated in real time."

nlite: Development tool for Windows

It's a freeware but useful utility.

Remove Windows components like Media Player, Internet Explorer, Outlook Express and more

nLite is a GUI for permanent Windows component removal by your choice.

After removal there is an option to make bootable image ready for burning on cd or testing in virtual machines.

With nLite you will be able to have Windows installation which on install doesn't include, or even contain on cd, unwanted components.

Mainly, it's a little bit of a slipstreamer, customizer, reducer and iso creator all in one package.

Quick overview :

1. Slipstream - After you extract it to any folder and ran it, you can browse and point to folder on hard drive which contains your Windows installation.
If you pointed to right folder with i386 in it and Windows id files, nLite will detect if you have already slipstreamed SP1 or SP2, and if not it will change Browse button to Slipstream, when pressed it asks for Service Pack installation file (or update.exe if you extracted it). Then it Slipstreams it passively. Or you can configure your existing version without slipstreaming.

2. Customize/Reduce - Choose which components to remove from your Windows installation permanently. It's version independent, it's possible because I'm not using filelists, well, allmost. There is only an inf-filelist which then gets parsed for used files, so ~95% of file names are automatically generated from your own inf's. The other 5% are manually added. Most likely nLite will work with future versions of Windows XP without any problem.

3. Advanced Options - Make sure to keep Data directory with nLite and all the files in it unrenamed. Added automatic hacking of syssetup.dll for OOBE disabling (if you choose to remove it, this will not crack Activation). SFC is entirely disabled too simply by copying hacked dll from Data and adjusting registry. Many options to add in the future, priority so far was on reduction issues.

4. Make ISO - This section is using external file datacdimage.exe which I believe don't need introducing. When reduction process finishes you can copy additional files to installation directory and then press Make ISO, it will ask you for desired ISO name and location.

We see that many of the avi files getting corrupted this is useually noticed during playback.Problems like freezing or distorted images occur due to bad frames and another big problem with this corrupt files is that we cannot play the movie from any position this happens because of bad index file.Which would be created during the creation of video file and the problem cannot be fixed.

DivFix++ is a portable Open Source avi fixer for Windows, Linux and Macintosh computers. It comes with a graphical user interface and a command line version. The graphical user interface is probably the most comfortable. Videos can be dragged and dropped into the interface or added by using the file browser. A click on the check errors button will scan the video files in the queue and display information if errors have been encountered.

A few settings are necessary before videos can be fixed. The first is to set a path for the fixed video files. A few additional settings are optional. Bad parts are cut out by default which could result in skips during playback. Probably still the better solution than a video that is stopping and not continuing afterwards. Errors can be written to a log file for further analysis but they will also be displayed in the log window.

Internet Explorer flaw puts bank passwords at risk

A fault in Internet Explorer could see online bank passwords at risk of being stolen by criminals

Microsoft is currently investigating the flaw which has previously been used to steal passwords for computer games by mainly Chinese websites.Now security experts are warning the flaw, if properly exploited, could result in IE users becoming vulnerable to criminals seeking banking passwords.

Around 10,000 computers are estimated to already be affected.

"We are actively investigating the vulnerability that these attacks attempt to exploit," Microsoft said in a statement.

"We will continue to monitor the threat environment and update this advisory if this situation changes."

It is considering an emergency software patch in addition to its monthly updates.

Trend Micro's Paul Ferguson has warned against "serious mayhem" which could occur if financial criminals work out how to use the flaw on a large scale.

Security experts are warning until the problem is resolved users should shift to an alternative browser, such as Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome or Apple's Safari.

Previous versions of IE are also believed to be affected

Owen Roberts at credit reference agency Call Credit explained IE was mainly targeted as it was the most common browser.

"I use Internet Explorer and on the train to work I read about the problem. My first thought was I am going to change to a new browser when I get home," he said.

He added it was most important to have an up-to-date version of anti-virus software and install all updates from Microsoft.

"It is also commonsense. When shopping or giving credit card details research any new websites and you are usually safe if you stick to sites like Amazon or eBay," Mr Roberts said.

A spokesperson for Barclays said: "The main message is it is enough that customers ensure their PCs have the appropriate internet security and latest version of software and keep it up-to-date.

"Really it is business as usual."

Anyone who is a victim to online fraud should have any losses refunded by their bank or building society – unless they are found to be at fault by giving away details or not having up-to-date virus protection.

A number of banks – including Barclays and RBS – offer free anti-virus software to customers.

Greasefire is a Firefox add-on that will tell you if there are any user scripts for the page you're visiting. When you have Greasefire and Greasemonkey installed a little monkey will show up in the bottom right corner of your Firefox status bar. If there are scripts available for the site you're viewing, the monkey's background color will change to red. And when you right click on the icon you'll see the number of available scripts. Click on that number and a window will open telling you more about those scripts.

Last week another plugin was released with a similar purpose. App Discover will theoretically tell you if there are any user scripts, Firefox add-ons, or even Adobe AIR clients that will enhance your web experience for a specific page. But unlike Greasefire, App Discover will only work on web pages where the publisher has added a bit of code to the page to let the plugin know about recommended user scripts or add-ons. And since the plugin is so new, right now the number of sites optimized for use with App Discover is hovering around zero. Top 10 tips for Maintaining a Windows Vista computer

As a new Windows Vista PC/notebook user you will need to be prepared to deal with the amount of memory Windows Vista uses up. It is critical for you to know how to keep your PC in good shape and optimize your computer so it can run fast.I hope this 10 tips will be useful for someone new to the Windows Vista operating system.

1. First you need to get rid of all the Startup items that you don’t need. Windows Vista automatically starts
programs that you’ve chosen to start up when you start your computer. This slows down the amount of time it takes for your computer to start. I have nothing besides TaskScheduler and Windows Defender in my startup. I’ve removed all the other startup items and my computer started up noticeable faster.

In order to remove unnecessary startup programs, you will have to launch the System Configuration utility. Go to the Start menu by clicking on the Vista orb in the taskbar, then type in “msconfig” in the Search box. This will launch the System Configuration utility. Click on the tab which says “Startup”. Take a look at all the Startup items listed and uncheck the items that you don’t need. Once you’ve unchecked al the unnecessary startup items, just click on “Apply” and “Ok” to confirm your changes. Restart your computer for the changes
to take affect.

2. It is important to keep your desktop organized. Having a large amount of icons and programs on your desktop can make your computer load slow. Try to make folders and label each folder appropriately. Group all your documents and software and place them in the proper folders.

3. Use the Disk Cleanup utility to free up extra space on your computer. You can find this utility in the Accessories/System Tools menu. This utility will scan your computer and find temporary files and other unneccessary files that are taking up space on your computer. Select the files that you don’t need and click on “Okay” to delete these files. You can free up more space by clicking on the “More Options” tab and uninstalling all the programs that you don’t need.

4. Use the Disk Defragmenter tool in Accessories/System Tools menu to defragment your computer. Usually this is automatically done by default but just in case it’s not you can launch the Disk Defragmenter tool to defragment your hard disk manually.

5. Use Windows Update to keep your software up to date. Windows Update is automatically enabled on your Windows Vista OS but you have to manually select the updates you want to install.

You should always check for updates and install the recommended updates to keep your computer secure and stable.

6. If you don’t use the Windows Sidebar then close it. Closing the sidebar will save up some memory and allow you to use that memory for other processes.

7. Be prepared for viruses if you download a lot. Download firewall software like McAffee to protect your computer from viruses and other threats. Make sure you
scan files that you download from untrusted websites before you open them.

8. Windows Vista has a Readyboost feature that allows you to use the memory on certain USB flash drives to speed up your computer. If you have a USB flash drive you can enable Windows Vista

Readyboost on it and use it’s memory to speed up your computer. After testing this with a 1GB Sandisk Cruzer, Windows Vista Readyboost made my computer run noticeabley faster.

9. Set your Windows Vista password to a secure password. If someone stole your PC or notebook they could find readily available software to hack in to your computer. Make sure you use a good password
to protect your account. Using an eight character password with a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters will make your account very secure.

10. If you’re a notebook user and you use WiFi, turn off the WiFi whenever you’re not using your notebook. This will save you battery time and allow you to use your notebook for a longer period without having to recharge your notebook. Adjusting the brightness on your screen, and muting the volume also helps with saving power. You can also go to Control Panel and click Power Options. Choosing the “Power Saver” plan will really save you a lot of energy.

Exit the Registry and reboot.

A new tool that is capable of automatically stealing the Gmail IDs of non-encrypted sessions and breaking into Gmail accounts has been presented at the Defcon hackers' conference in Las Vegas.

Last week Google introduced a new feature in Gmail that allows users to permanently switch on SSL and use it for every action involving Gmail, and not only, authentication. Users who did not turn it on now have a serious reason to do so as Mike Perry, the reverse engineer from San Francisco who developed this hacking tool is planning to release the tool in two weeks.

When you log in to Gmail account the website sends a cookie (a text file) containing your session ID to the browser. This file makes it possible for the website to know that you are authenticated and keep you logged in for two weeks, unless you manually click the sign out button. When you click sign out this cookie is cleared.Even though when you log in, Gmail forces the authentication over SSL (Secure Socket Layer), you are not secure because it reverts back to a regular unencrypted connection after the authentication is done.

According to Google this behavior was chosen because of low-bandwidth users, as SLL connections requires high bandwidth.The problem lies with the fact that every time you access anything on Gmail, even an image, your browser also sends your cookie to the website. This makes it possible for a hacker to sniff the traffic on the network to insert an image served from http://mail.google.com and force your browser to send the cookie file, thus getting your session ID. Once this happens the hacker can log in to the account without the need of a password. People checking their e-mail from public wireless hotspots are more likely to get hacked than the ones using secure wired networks.

Perry mentioned that he notified Google about this situation over a year ago and even though eventually it made this option available, he is not happy with the lack of information. "Google did not explain why using this new feature was so important" he said. He continued and explained the implications of not informing the users, "This gives people who routinely log in to Gmail beginning with an https:// session a false sense of security, because they think they're secure but they're really not.

"If you are logging in to your Gmail account from different locations and you would like to benefit from this option only when you are using unsecured networks, you can force it by manually typing https://mail.google.com before you log in. This will access the SSL version of Gmail and it will be persistent over your entire session and not only during authentication.

I am writing this article in Firefox and most likely you are going to read it in Firefox too (if not, why not?). So without further ado, I present you my choice of top 10 smart browsing hacks for Firefox:

1. How to Speed Up Firefox

This is one of the most vital tricks for you if you want to gear up with a quick browser. If you have a broadband connection (and most of us do), you can use pipe lining to speed up your page loads. This allows Firefox to load multiple things on a page at once, instead of one at a time (by default, it’s optimized for dial-up connections). Here’s how:

Type about:config into the address bar and hit return.
Type network.http in the filter field, and change the following settings (double-click on them to change them):
Set network.http.pipelining to true
Set network.http.proxy.pipelining to true
Set network.http.pipelining.maxrequests to a number like 30. This will allow it to make 30 requests at once.
Also, right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it nglayout.initialpaint.delay and set its value to “0? This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

It may seem greek or latin to you. Trust me, its not going to harm your computer or Firefox in any way, rather you will enjoy much faster browsing from now on. Try it and let me know.

2. How to Type URL's Faster

You don't have to type a http://www. and then the website name followed by .com to enter go to a website as before. Now you can just type the name and Firefox will do the rest. Let me show you with a simple example:

Type wwe and then press Ctrl + Enter and you are done!

Firefox will convert wwe to http://www.wwe.com internally and take you to the website.

Note:* For.net addresses, press Shift-Enter.
* For .org addresses, press Control-Shift-Enter

3. How to Navigate Tabs from Keyboard

Usually the most used and arguably the most important feature of Firefox is tabs so much so that Microsoft was forced to imitate it in IE 7. Suppose you are surfing a number of websites at a time, but to navigate between them you would normally use a mouse to switch between tabs. Not any more. Here are some cool tab navigation techniques using just your keyboard:

* Ctrl+Tab (rotate forward among tabs; when it reaches the last tab, it moves forward to the first tab)
* Ctrl+Shft+Tab (rotate to the previous tab; similar to above, Ctrl-Shift-Tab from first tab will take you to the last tab)

With lots of tabs, it is mighty inconvenient and hard to navigate using the scrollbar. Suppose at some point of time you have a lot of websites to surf through and you have opened all of them with tabs. How annoying will it be to press the scroll button every time you need to go to one website from another? It would be much easier if Firefox reduced the width of tabs to lower than 100px instead. To solve this problem and get rid of the scrollbar here is a simple trick:

Go to Fireox address bar
Type about:config, press ENTER
At the filter bar, type browser.tabs.tabMinWidth
Right click on the result displayed and click Modify
Change it to 0 (by default its 100). You are done.

Note: You can reduce the minimum width to 50px, 60px, anything you like. The lesser the number is, more tabs can show without having to use dreaded scroll bar.

7. How to Start Downloading Add-ons Immediately

Add-ons are special features in the Firefox browser. So is your every second. That is why you may not like to wait even for the mandatory 5 seconds / 2 seconds (depending on Firefox version) before downloading any add-on. Why not start downloading add-ons immediately?

Here is how you can do it:

Go to Firefox address bar
Type about:config, press ENTER
At the filter bar, type security.dialog_enable_delay
Right click on the result displayed and click Modify
>Change the value to '0′

8. How to Limit Firefox Memory Usage

Do you think that Firefox is slowing your computer down by guzzling lots of memory? Now I will show you a way to reign your Firefox from guzzling up your memory

Go to about:config
Filter browser.cache and select browser.cache.disk.capacity.
It’s set to 50000, but you can lower it, depending on how much memory you have. Try 15000 if you have between 512MB and 1GB ram.

Now you can tell Firefox exactly how much memory it can use. Don't make it too low as that may affect performance

9. How to Move or Remove The 'close tab' Button

Do you accidentally click on the close button of Firefox’s tabs? You can move them or even remove them, again through about:config. Edit the preference for browser.tabs.closeButtons. Here are the meaning for each value:

0 - Display a close button on the active tab only
1 - (Default) Display close buttons on all tabs
2 - Don’t display any close buttons
3 - Display a single close button at the end of the tab bar (Firefox 1.x behavior)

Microsoft India Offers Free Talk time to promote Live Search

Microsoft India has launched an online campaign at WinWithSearch.com to promote its Live Search service in the country. According to Microsoft, WinWithSearch hosts a contest where users of the Live search engine stand to win a reward of free talk-time worth Rs 100 every 10 minutes. The contest will run till January 03, 2009.

According to the company, when a user is on the Live Search contest page, for every search that he or she does, a pair of dice will roll and if the user gets a double '6' within a 10 minute interval, he or she will be the winner. To give the awards, Microsoft India has tied up with Oxigen , a single point recharge service company.

Speaking about the objective of this campaign, Ravi Datanwala, group manager, Live Search, Microsoft India, has told AlooTechie, “Through this campaign, we want to reach a lot of people who are not aware about the advanced usability features that are incorporated in Live Search. Moreover, this is our endeavour to add the element of fun while searching.”

Infuriated at the idea of pointlessly registering for yet another site you turn to your good buddy bugmenot.com

Instructions

STEP 1: Make a note of the website address your are trying to access. For example:
http://www.nytimes.com/cnet/CNET_2100-1024_3-5567274.html
Or even just:
www.nytimes.com

STEP 2: Visit http://bugmenot.com
